On Thursday 11th September, we gathered for our AGM and Annual Supporters’ Meeting — an evening full of reflection, gratitude, and celebration.
Guided by our compere Ghani, the programme brought together voices from across Asylum Welcome.
Our Joint CEOs, Sarah and Hari, shared their thanks for the past year and their vision for the future. Michael, a former client of our Education & Employment service, gave a moving speech about the part Asylum Welcome played in his life. With support from the team, he was able to pursue his studies, and has now begun an undergraduate degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford Brookes.
The evening also marked a major milestone: 10 years of Sanctuary Hosting. Born out of a call for compassion in Oxford in September 2015 (following a long gestation), the service has since provided over 40,000 nights of shelter to 300 guests.
At the AGM we reflected on that journey, hearing directly from Service Manager Tania Baldwin-Pask, co-founder Wyon Stansfeld, and a panel of hosts, guests and supporters —Kate, Aiham, Parnian, Barin and Jo — whose thoughtful, honest, moving and sometimes humorous contributions brought the service vividly to life, as did a beautiful poem from co-founder and Service Coordinator Eden Habtemichael.
We were also delighted to unveil a new Sanctuary Hosting exhibition, celebrating ten years of hospitality and hope. If you would like to host this exhibition at your faith or community group, please do get in touch.
Tony Samuel, Co-Chair of Trustees, led the formal business of the AGM before the evening ended with a delicious buffet and rousing music from the Sudanese community. At a time of increasing hostility towards sanctuary seekers, it was uplifting to come together and celebrate community in action.
Now, more than ever, we are conscious that our work is only possible thanks to the commitment and passion of our supporters. If you are able, please consider setting up a regular donation — your ongoing support helps us provide stability and hope to those who need it most.
